Freedom from Torture is a charity dedicated to healing and protecting survivors of torture. Torture is used to intimidate, silence and oppress. It is a devastating experience that leaves behind long-lasting trauma. To escape it, survivors must flee to foreign countries, often arriving with nothing but the clothes on their back and leaving behind their friends, family, jobs and communities.
We set up our first North West centre in 2003, in response to the dispersal of asylum seekers across the North West of England. Since then we have supported hundreds of clients living across Cheshire, Greater Manchester, Lancashire and Merseyside.
We opened our new clinical centre in Moss Side, Manchester in November 2021. The centre is a new, unique space, carefully designed to be colourful, bright and welcoming, to support the healing of survivors.
At the centre, our highly qualified, committed clinicians support men, women and children to access a holistic programme of support including our trauma- focused therapies, which are clinically proven to improve their mental health and reduce PTSD symptoms. We also offer a pain management service, legal and welfare advice and practical support to ensure our clients are not left homeless or destitute.
With over 10,000 asylum seekers placed in dispersed accommodation in the North West last year- the highest number in any region in the UK - the need for our services are more vital than ever.
"Since our first centre opened in Manchester in 2003, Freedom from Torture’s clinicians have worked tirelessly providing vital care and support to survivors of torture across the North West. The launch of our new centre in Manchester will allow Freedom from Torture to expand and enhance our therapeutic, legal and welfare services and continue to help torture survivors rebuild their lives in our community with dignity and humanity."Ann Salter, Clinical Services Manager
